Title: Training Judges: From Impertinence to Importance
Speaker: Martin Partington

Having spoken about the Law Commission last year, Martin's talk this time is about the creation of another law-related body – the Judicial College – which he suspects few people will have heard of. Martin will show how it developed from rather basic sessions on sentencing to the wide programme of courses which are now provided by the College to judges across the English Legal System. He will talk about some of the key people who saw the need for judicial education and training – often in the teeth of considerable opposition, and will offer some personal reflections on some of the contributions he was able to make to these developments.

Martin Partington has had a varied career as legal academic, practitioner, tribunal judge, judicial trainer, law reformer and businessman. Among other posts, he was Dean of Law and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bristol, Training Advisor to the Senior President of Social Security Appeals Tribunals, member of the Judicial Studies Board (the precursor to the Judicial College), chair of the ADR Committee of the Civil Justice Council, and a member of the Leggatt Review of Tribunals. He and his wife moved to Ealing in December 2024, since when they have been active members of Ealing U3a.
